Psalm 6--O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed. My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long? Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies' sake. For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies. Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping. The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer. Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: let them return and be ashamed suddenly.
This psalm deals more with the guilt and sorrow a child of God experiences when he falls into sin, and the fear brought upon his soul because of his enemies. He asks that the Lord will help him and not rebuke him in anger. He realizes how weak and frail he is, and the guilt presses on him so hard that his bones are vexed. The weeping and groaning makes him weary. The pain is so strong that tears pour down, and his eye is consumed with grief. The tears don't only come from sin, but also from the fierce attacks of the enemy on every side. Those who say things like "men don't cry" are fools. Real men pray that God will make them cry when they feel that they have lost that ability. He desires to cry in genuine sorrow for sin. He desires to cry real tears of joy when he hears that his wicked deeds, and the evil motives of his heart, are forgiven only for the sake of the passion and death of his Savior.
In the midst of the fierce attacks of the enemy, and under the heavy, crushing burden of sin, he cries out to the enemy, "Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity, for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping." His trust is in God, and the Holy Spirit assures him that God will hear his prayer. The amazing thing is that he prays that the shame may be taken away from him, and placed upon his enemies. He prays for the destruction of the wicked, and He prays that those who are fellow believers that persecute him may be shamed with the shame that leads to repentance.
