Psalm 133--Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
One way that we show our love for the brethren is by our use of the tongue. Gossip, slander, or mocking those who live godly lives is to use the tongue to murder, kill, and to destroy. It is to kill those who have been made alive in Christ. Another misuse of the tongue is to take God's name in vain, either by rash swearing, foolish jesting, or even when we sing without thinking about what we are really saying.
We can, however, use the tongue in a godly manner, although never perfectly in this life. We can use it to glorify God. We glorify Him when we commune with the saints, edify one another, and sing praise from the heart. Also, we use the tongue for confession of sin to God and those who we sin against. Only the believer who has salvation in Jesus Christ can use the tongue, by the grace of God, in this manner. Only the believer can use it to show his thankfulness for deliverance from the guilt and dominion of sin.
